A key component of this system is the airport fueling facility \u2014 the airport\u2019s \u201ccirculatory system,\u201d a vital artery responsible for the uninterrupted supply of aviation fuel.<\/p><p>Though hidden from passengers\u2019 view, it\u2019s on the ground that intricate technological processes unfold: from the reception and rigorous laboratory testing of jet fuel to its multi-stage filtration and precise refueling of aircraft. Without the flawless operation of this facility, no aircraft can take off.<\/p><p><strong>Fuel\u2019s Journey: The First Barrier \u2014 Quality Standards<\/strong><\/p><p>The journey of aviation fuel doesn\u2019t begin in an aircraft\u2019s tank, or even at the refinery. It starts the moment the fuel is tested against strict regulatory standards.<\/p><p>For many years in Kazakhstan \u2014 as in several other countries \u2014 this benchmark was GOST (State Standard). Introduced back in 1925, GOST was a cornerstone of scientific and industrial life in the USSR. Developing these standards was a complex and time-consuming process involving leading research institutes, design organizations, and dozens of specialized ministries. Approval by the State Standard Committee could take years, and the final documents reflected the most advanced scientific knowledge of their time.<\/p><p>But as global aviation developed and international air traffic grew, there emerged an urgent need for a universal &#171;language&#187; of quality \u2014 one understood equally by airlines, aircraft manufacturers, and airports around the world. This role has been taken on by the ASTM standard (American Society for Testing and Materials), which is now the global benchmark for Jet A-1 aviation fuel.<\/p><p>It\u2019s important to understand that these systems didn\u2019t evolve in isolation. The fundamental principles of chemistry, physics, and flight safety are universal.<\/p><p>So today, the question is not which system is \u201cbetter,\u201d but which one is the accepted standard in the global aviation industry. For an airport to serve aircraft from any airline worldwide without restrictions, both its infrastructure and its fuel must comply with the current international standard.<\/p><p><strong>Tank Farm: The Steel Lungs of the Fueling Facility<\/strong><\/p><p>Once the lab gives the green light, the fuel is directed to the tank farm \u2014 a strategic storage area that acts like the airport\u2019s steel lungs. These are massive vertical or horizontal tanks, each capable of holding thousands of cubic meters of kerosene, where the fuel is stored and kept in constant readiness.<\/p><p>But these are far more than just barrels. Each tank is a sophisticated engineering structure equipped with an array of monitoring and safety systems.<\/p><p>Sensors for level, temperature, and pressure act as the tank\u2019s &#171;sensory organs,&#187; constantly transmitting telemetry to the control center. Automatic foam or gas fire suppression systems can neutralize even the smallest fire in seconds. Emergency drainage systems allow a tank to be emptied rapidly in case of an incident.<\/p><p>Since steel tanks are particularly vulnerable to lightning strikes \u2014 and since fuel movement generates static electricity \u2014 powerful grounding and lightning protection systems are essential, safely redirecting any electrical charge into the ground.<\/p><p>Fuel types like TS-1 and Jet A-1 are never mixed until they reach the wing of the aircraft. It\u2019s not that the plane wouldn\u2019t fly \u2014 but the resulting mixture would have unpredictable physical and chemical properties, which is unacceptable in aviation. It\u2019s like mixing two different medications: the outcome could be ineffective \u2014 or even toxic.<\/p><p>That\u2019s why each fuel type has its own sealed ecosystem: separate tanks, separate pipelines, separate pumps, and even specially marked fuel trucks. Each element is designed to prevent cross-contamination and ensure that the fuel delivered to the aircraft is exactly what it should be \u2014 nothing more, nothing less.<\/p><p><strong>Filtration: Hunting the Invisible Enemy<\/strong><\/p><p>Before entering the aircraft, the fuel passes through a multi-stage \u201ccleaning corridor\u201d to eliminate two of aviation engines\u2019 worst enemies: mechanical particles and water.<\/p><p>First, coarse filters remove large visible particles. But the real battle happens during fine filtration, where mesh screens with openings as small as 1\u20132 microns trap contaminants invisible to the naked eye. For comparison, a human hair is about 70 microns thick.<\/p><p>The most insidious enemy is water, which can be present in the fuel in dissolved form. At altitude, where temperatures drop to \u201350 \u00b0C, these microdroplets can freeze into ice crystals capable of blocking fuel lines and filters.<\/p><p>To prevent this, fueling facilities use filter-separators that operate on the principle of coalescence (from Latin coalescere \u2014 &#171;to grow together&#187;). Special hydrophobic fiber cartridges force microscopic droplets to merge into larger, heavier drops that settle and are removed by gravity.<\/p><p>At the final stage, the fuel undergoes anti-static treatment. As kerosene rapidly flows through pipelines, it builds up static electricity, which could spark and ignite vapors. Special additives or equipment \u201ccalm\u201d the fuel, neutralizing the charge and ensuring complete electrical safety.<\/p><p><strong>Fueling: The Final Handshake<\/strong><\/p><p>The final and most critical stage is delivering the fuel onboard. Depending on the airport&#8217;s infrastructure, this is done in two ways.<\/p><p>The classic and most universal method is by fuel truck \u2014 not just a \u201ctank on wheels,\u201d but a complex mobile station with its own pumps, fine filters, high-precision meters, and control systems. It\u2019s ideal for airports with moderate traffic and offers flexibility.<\/p><p>In large hub airports, where every minute counts, hydrant systems are used. The name comes from the Greek hydor (\u1f55\u03b4\u03c9\u03c1), meaning \u201cwater,\u201d similar to fire hydrants. An underground pipeline network delivers fuel under high pressure directly to each aircraft stand. A special dispenser truck connects the hydrant to the aircraft wing, allowing wide-body airliners \u2014 which can require 100+ tons of kerosene \u2014 to be refueled at rates of up to 3,000 liters per minute.<\/p><p>But no fueling can begin without the key safety procedure: grounding. The aircraft and fueling system are connected by a grounding cable that equalizes their electric potentials, eliminating the risk of a static spark.<\/p><p>The operator\u2019s screen displays all telemetry data: pressure, temperature, fuel volume, and most importantly, the fuel batch number. This isn\u2019t just \u201cfueling\u201d \u2014 it\u2019s a certified technological operation, where every action is logged to ensure full traceability and safety.<\/p><p><strong>The Digital Nervous System: AFC Under Constant Control<\/strong><\/p><p>In aviation fueling, where the cost of error is measured not in money but in human lives, the human factor must be minimized. Modern fueling facilities are therefore equipped with complex automated control systems \u2014 a kind of digital brain and nervous system that monitors every aspect of the operation in real time.<\/p><p>These systems track hundreds of parameters around the clock. They monitor fuel movement throughout the facility, managing every valve and pump to ensure precise and safe transfer. Sensors in the tanks constantly report on equipment status \u2014 from pump pressure to fuel level and temperature \u2014 even predicting malfunctions before they occur.<\/p><p>Integrated fire safety and personnel identification systems ensure strict access control and immediate response to any potential threat.<\/p><p>Every operation, from receiving a fuel shipment to refueling a specific aircraft, is documented and stored in a unified digital database. The result is a complete digital trail: at any moment, it\u2019s possible to trace exactly how much fuel, from which batch, tested by which lab technician, and delivered by which operator, went into a specific aircraft.<\/p><p>This level of transparency and accountability is a core requirement of international aviation standards.<\/p><p><strong>KazMunayGas-Aero\u2019s Project in Aktobe: Building the Future Today<\/strong><\/p><p>A clear example of how these principles are being put into practice in Kazakhstan is the KazMunayGas-Aero project in Aktobe. What\u2019s being built here is not just another fueling facility \u2014 it\u2019s a next-generation infrastructure complex, fully designed in accordance with international JIG 1, JIG 2, and EI\/JIG Standard 1530 requirements.<\/p><p>At the heart of the facility will be a tank farm (oil depot) with a total storage capacity of 20,200 cubic meters. From the outset, it is engineered for segregated storage of different fuel types:<\/p><ul><li>12,200 m\u00b3 for aviation kerosene (including TS-1, RT, and Jet A-1)<\/li><li>2,000 m\u00b3 each for AI-95 and AI-92 gasoline<\/li><li>2,000 m\u00b3 each for summer and winter diesel fuel<\/li><\/ul><p>This setup turns the complex into a multi-fuel hub serving the entire region.<\/p><p>To ensure uninterrupted supply, a modern dual-sided rail loading and unloading rack will be built. On the apron, fueling operations will be supported by a mobile fueling station, and the ground fleet will be expanded with two new refueling trucks.<\/p><p>All complex processes will be centrally managed from an administrative building with a dispatch center, which will monitor tank levels and control fuel transfers. A modern in-house laboratory will guarantee fuel purity and compliance with standards, while a new fire station with dedicated vehicles will ensure safety.<\/p><p>This project is not just a local construction initiative \u2014 it is a strategic step toward achieving the national objective of transforming Kazakhstan\u2019s key airports into full-fledged international hubs, capable of welcoming any aircraft and delivering world-class ground services.<\/p><p><strong>Aviation Begins on the Ground<\/strong><\/p><p>To sum it all up: a flight begins long before the aircraft starts rolling down the runway.<\/p><p>It begins in the quiet of laboratories, inside steel tanks, in the steady work of pumps and filters \u2014 in the carefully controlled journey of jet fuel, overseen by specialists passengers will never meet.<\/p><p>Fuel is not just a flammable liquid. It\u2019s chemistry, precision, tolerance, and engineering. It\u2019s safety, measured in microns and milligrams.<\/p><p>And when a multi-ton airliner gracefully lifts off the ground, it carries not only passengers and cargo \u2014 but also the invisible work of those who stayed on the ground.<\/p><p>The people who, quite literally, fuel the flight with energy.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element
