KazMunayGas and LanzaJet Discuss Eco-Friendly Aviation Fuel Production Project in Kazakhstan

As part of a working visit to the United States, the Chairman of the Board of JSC NC “KazMunayGas” (KMG) Askhat Khassenov held a meeting with Jimmy Samartzis, the CEO of the American technology company LanzaJet.

The parties discussed further development of bilateral cooperation aimed at establishing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production in Kazakhstan.

During the conversation, A. Khassenov emphasized that the partnership with LanzaJet opens up prospects for the development of sustainable energy solutions. The implementation of technologies for the production of low-carbon alternative fuels is important for Kazakhstan.

The head of KMG expressed gratitude to J. Samartzis for LanzaJet’s interest in the project to build an eco-friendly aviation fuel plant in Kazakhstan. Both parties confirmed their commitment to accelerate the preparation of the project’s feasibility study (FS).

“Joint work will make a significant contribution to achieving low-carbon development goals, introducing the latest technologies, and helping KMG reduce emissions by 15% by 2031 compared to 2019 levels. Overall, the project will seriously impact the development of the biofuel market and Kazakhstan’s transit capabilities,” noted A. Khassenov.

The preliminary feasibility study phase has already been completed. The preparation of the full feasibility study is expected to be completed this year.

Reference: LanzaJet is known for developing a certified SAF production technology from ethanol (“alcohol-to-jet”). The company has long-term SAF supply agreements with major airlines, including All Nippon Airways, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic. LanzaJet’s “alcohol-to-jet” technology can use ethanol derived from any biological or non-biological feedstock, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions (by up to 95%) and increasing energy efficiency.
